The Central Electoral Commission of Georgia has formally requested that the Attorney General investigate allegations of electoral fraud following the parliamentary elections held last Saturday.
This request arises amidst escalating political tensions, particularly involving President Salomé Zourabichvili and various political parties that have raised concerns regarding potential irregularities in the electoral process.
Despite these allegations, the Commission maintains that they are unfounded and lacks the resources to conduct a thorough investigation.
In a statement, it expressed frustration over the intense criticism and accusations directed at it since the election results were announced. The Commission highlighted that international observers, including those from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), had assessed the elections positively.
The Commission further asserted that the ongoing accusations seem aimed at undermining its credibility. It emphasized that claims of fraud necessitate a “complex and objective” investigation, which is beyond its operational capacity.
The statement clarified that while it is reviewing submitted complaints, the scale of allegations from some politicians appears exaggerated.
In light of these circumstances, the Commission has suggested to the Attorney General that an independent investigation be initiated to address the claims made by President Zourabichvili and others. A representative from the Commission expressed readiness to cooperate fully with any inquiry and provide all necessary information.
